Theological Note

The Sunday after Ascension Day falls between the Lord's exaltation and the coming of Whitsunday, in the ten days of watchful waiting that the disciples kept in Jerusalem. They had witnessed the Ascension and been directed by two angels to return to the city and wait for the promise of the Father. The Church relives that expectant interval in the week between Ascension and Pentecost, and the Sunday within it bears the character of holy anticipation.

The Collect captures the mood with great pastoral precision: O God, the King of glory, who hast exalted thine only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph unto thy kingdom in heaven; We beseech thee, leave us not comfortless; but send to us thine Holy Ghost to comfort us, and exalt us unto the same place whither our Saviour Christ is gone before. The word comfortless deliberately echoes John 14, where our Lord promised he would not leave his disciples as orphans but would send another Comforter. The Collect is at once a profession of faith in the Ascension and a petition for Pentecost.

The appointed Epistle from 1 Peter 4 calls the Church to sober, watchful, fervent prayer and to mutual service as stewards of the manifold grace of God. The appointed Gospel from John 15 gives the Lord's own words about the promised Spirit: But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me. The Sunday after Ascension thus stands as a liturgical bridge — grounded in what Christ has accomplished and leaning forward into what the Spirit is about to give.

Amen.
