Lay Readers & Lectors

Proclaiming the Word of God in the Assembly of His People

Lay Readers and Lectors serve a vital role in the liturgy at Saint Paul’s Anglican Church by reading Holy Scripture aloud during public worship. As Saint Paul wrote, “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). Our readers help make that hearing clear, reverent, and prayerful.

Lectors are entrusted with reading the appointed lessons during the Liturgy of the Word—typically the Old Testament and New Testament readings. Some trained Lay Readers may also lead the Prayers of the People, assist at Morning and Evening Prayer, and support the clergy in other liturgical functions.

Licensed Ministry

Lay Readers at Saint Paul’s are licensed by Bishop Ray Sutton, Presiding Bishop of the Reformed Episcopal Church and bishop ordinary of the Diocese of Mid-America. They serve under the authority and direction of the Rector and in accordance with the canons of our diocese.

Lay Readers wear a blue Reader’s scarf when vested and serving at the lectern, a visible sign of their office and calling to the public reading of Scripture and service in prayer.

Responsibilities

  • Read Scripture clearly and reverently during services
  • Lead Morning and Evening Prayer services as needed
  • Assist in the liturgy of special services and feast days
  • Be spiritually prepared through prayer, Scripture study, and reverent conduct
