Young Men Serving with Reverence at the Altar of God
The Acolyte Guild at Saint Paul’s Anglican Church is made up of boys and young men who serve at the altar in the liturgy of the Church. In this ministry, they learn discipline, reverence, and attentiveness while assisting the clergy in the worship of Almighty God.
Acolytes assist in the sacred duties of the Church’s public worship—carrying the cross, bearing torches, assisting the priest, and helping the congregation lift their hearts to the Lord. It is a high calling and a formative path for young men to grow in character, faith, and service.
Roles Within the Acolyte Guild
- Crucifer – Carries the processional cross
- Torchbearer – Carries candles during the Gospel and processions
- Thurifer – Handles incense on holy days and feast services
- Server / Altar Assistant – Assists the clergy at the altar with preparation and post-communion duties
Who Can Serve?
This ministry is open to boys age 10 and older who demonstrate maturity, attentiveness, and a heart for service. The Acolyte Guild is an important way we train young men to take responsibility, cultivate reverence, and participate in the life of the Church.
“I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.”
— Psalm 84:10 (KJV)
Vestments & Expectations
Acolytes vest in cassock and surplice, arriving early and serving with focus and humility. Training is provided and regular participation is expected. Serving at the altar is not just a task—it is worship.
