The Sunday called Sexagesima, or the second Sunday before Lent.
O LORD God, who seest that we put not our trust in any thing that we do; Mercifully grant that by thy power we may be defended against all adversity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Short Meditation
“Grant that we may be defended against all adversities…” It will make this prayer clearer if we take the word “adversity” in its earlier sense, something which turns us aside from our true goal. This may be compared to the thorns which choked the good seed typifying “the cares and riches and pleasures of this life“ which choke so many souls. We need help to realize the true values of life last we make these subsidiary elements stumbling blocks in our way. We cannot put our trust in anything that we do, and we must pray for God’s power to defend us, so that we may “run the straight race through God’s good Grace”
