David’s Son, David’s Lord, Our King: The Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity (Matthew 22:34–46)

Fr. Steve Macias preaches on Matthew 22:34–46 for the Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity: David's Lord and David's Son, the greater King, and how families, schools, and parishes live under His reign.

Even the greatest king in Israel’s history bows before Jesus Christ. In Matthew 22, the Pharisees try to trap Jesus, and He asks them: “What think ye of Christ? Whose son is he?” They answer, David’s. Jesus points them to Psalm 110, where David calls his own descendant “Lord.” As St. Augustine put it, “David’s Lord always, David’s Son in time.”

Three Things from This Passage

  1. The great king bows to a greater King. David had courage, led a nation, and did justice, but he could not save his people. Christ can.
  2. Bringing our lives under the King. The question is not whether we know God’s commands, but who actually governs our speech, our possessions, and our relationships.
  3. Preparing those who come after us. David gathered materials for a temple he would never see. Parents, teachers, and clergy are preparing people to stay faithful to Christ when we are no longer there to guide them.

Every authority we hold is held on Christ’s behalf. Our homes, classrooms, and parish exist to point to a greater King, and we can face the work without despair, because His reign has no end.
